According to those familiar with the situation, Apple’s intention to include a much-anticipated blood-pressure monitor in its Apple Watch 8 wristwatch has struck some roadblocks, and the technology isn’t likely to be available until 2024 at the earliest.

The business is working on an improved sensor and software for the Apple Watch to assess if a user has high blood pressure, but accuracy has been an issue during testing, according to the sources, who did not want to be identified since the topic is private.

Apple Watch 8 feature has been in the works for at least four years, but it’s still two years away from being released, and it might be delayed until 2025, according to them. In the next years, blood-pressure monitoring functions may become a crucial selling point for smartwatches, but the technology hasn’t been simple to develop. Though Apple’s competitors, such as Samsung Electronics, have released watches with the feature, they require monthly calibration with a standard monitor. Fitbit, which is owned by Alphabet, conducted a public trial last year to explore wrist-based blood pressure measuring.

Employees are being tested for the iPhone maker’s blood-pressure technology. Its proposed technique would not reveal users’ particular systolic and diastolic readings — the numbers used to gauge blood pressure — but will warn users that they may have hypertension, or high blood pressure, and that they should contact a doctor or use a regular blood pressure checker.

The business is also working on including non-invasive blood sugar monitoring into the watch, which might be beneficial to diabetics. That feature is still a few years away and has yet to be allocated a release date. In the meanwhile, the firm is considering improving the watch’s and iPhone’s Health app’s compatibility for third-party glucose meters. Read also: iPhone 14: Camera | Processor – How Far We Know

While Apple’s blood pressure and glucose monitoring tools are still in the works, the firm is working on other improvements that will be available sooner. There are new features for women’s health, sleep, exercise, and medication management.

This year, Apple is expected to release three new Apple Watch models: a normal Series 8 model, a low-cost SE model, and an upmarket one with a robust case geared at extreme athletes.
